Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa: Jobs for Africa’s Youth

The objective of the panel discussion is to raise awareness on mutually beneficial correlation between PIDA/Infrastructure and job creation/skills development for youth: What data/ information do we have? What is our objective? What worked and what it didn’t? Additionally, it is to come up with innovative ideas/concepts on how infrastructure projects shall be planned, managed to have greatest effect on job creation/youth development, how Job creation/skills development can be factored into infrastructure investment, e.g. Pilots to link PIDA project directly with a youth initiative on job creation and skills development and the role of public and private sector here. Moreover, it is to mainstream the role of academia into PIDA - research to help raising awareness and to help make informed decisions.
This panel discussion highlights the importance of interconnected and reliable infrastructure services for an industrialized, service-oriented Africa, which provides enough job opportunities for its growing youth. Furthermore, the panel debated how infrastructure development should be steered and implemented to best serve the purpose of job creation, with a focus on youth. The panel also discussed the design of the right policies to leverage demographic dividend, combined with regional development programs supported by PIDA to be catalyst to Africa’s transformation.
